Noida: 3 cops booked after drug peddler flees custody

GREATER NOIDA: Three cops have been booked for negligence in duty after an alleged drug peddler escaped from their custody at Jewar police station, officials said on Friday.

A departmental enquiry was also initiated against them and teams have been formed to nab the accused.

The alleged drug peddler, Amit (24), a resident of Rabupura area in Greater Noida, was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) on Wednesday evening and around 1.5kg of marijuana was recovered from his possession.

Anjani Kumar Singh, SHO of Jewar police station, said, “On Thursday, Amit pretended to be feeling uneasy inside the lockup. He complained of dizziness and nausea to the home guard on duty. Harsh Bhati, the home guard, let him out so he could feel better and made him sit outside. However, Amit took advantage and fled the police station premises.”

A probe found that three of their personnel, including the home guard, were present at the time when Amit fled.

“The two constables have been identified as Bhupendra Kumar and Anju,” DCP (Greater Noida) Meenakshi Katyayan said. “We have registered a case against the three. Amit has also been named in the case.”

“We have initiated a departmental enquiry against the three for negligence in duty and the assistant commissioner concerned has been asked to look into the matter and file a detailed report against the three. Several teams have also been formed to nab Amit, who is on the run,” the officer said.
