Noel Whelan identifies 'fantastic' defender that Leeds United could target if they reach Premier League

Former Leeds United favourite Noel Whelan has suggested a "fantastic" centre-half for the club to target if they reach the Premier League - but he admits it could cost them big money.

The Whites are top of the Championship with just nine games of the regular season remaining.

But the coronavirus outbreak means matches have been suspended, with a return date of April 30 mooted although it could be much later when clubs eventually get back out on the pitch.

Despite the uncertainty of when they will return, Whelan hopes that his old club can finish the job they started and get back to English football's top table.

And if they do, he says Aston Villa's Tyrone Mings would be an astute, if expensive, acquisition.

However, he says that the move would only have a chance of happening if Villa are relegated. Dean Smith's side are currently in the relegation places in the top tier.

"The spine of a side is so important. Look at how important Virgil Van Dijk has been and Vincent Kompany over the past few years,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“Mings is a fantastic player and a great buy.

"I would have snapped him up after the way he played last season (for Villa).

“He got his England cap as well so it goes to show he is a very good centre-half.

"He has every attribute you would like – decent on the ball, strong, committed, good stature and very quick as well.

“He is a player that is only going to get better but if Aston Villa go down he will be in demand by other Premier League clubs.

"There may be a clause in his contract, but I would presume Aston Villa will want more than £30million.”
