'Nobody should have to face that' - Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe reacts to ugly fan incident

Eddie Howe has reacted to the ugly incident which saw a Leeds fan force his way into the technical area. Howe spoke of his total shock at the confrontation with the man later arrested following the shove at the end of the 2-2 draw.

Howe said: "I can't remember if he pushed me. It was such a strange thing. He confronted me and said something I can't repeat.

"Moments like that do make you think. The safety of staff and players is paramount and we need to be mindful."

Security from the home team and Newcastle's own security officer arrived quickly on to the scene before the man was led down the sidelines. Howe said: "I don't know if I had time to be fearful because it was over in a flash but it makes you think.

"No one should have to face that playing a sport they love and trying to entertain the country."

Howe's men must wait to secure Champions League football but the Newcastle boss remains unfazed over their chances. "We can wait a few more days if we achieve it, but obviously it’s the hardest league in the world," he added.

"It’s the toughest, and we were under no illusions about how difficult today was going to be. When we had our noses in front, that’s what makes it a little bit difficult to take, but onto the next match."
