'Nobody can promise when it will end' Dr Hilary Jones says Lockdown 2 is likely to be extended

Dr Hilary Jones has warned that a four-week lockdown may not be enough to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on October 31 that England would be going back into a strict lockdown from November 5, lasting until December 2.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Dr Hilary predicted that the lockdown would be extended on December 2.

He said: "The figures are alarming, and I think it was inevitable that we were going to go into a lockdown.

"A lot of people said that we should have done it earlier.

"Once the cat is out of the bag, and you've got so many cases in the public, it's very difficult to bring it under control and recover from it.

"We can recover from it, but a lockdown is needed.

"It's likely, I think, to be extended. Nobody can promise when it will end, because we just don't know how the virus and the population is going to behave and whether people will abide by the restrictions being imposed.

"To me, they seem very sensible. This is still a nasty virus, nothing has changed.

"We don't have rapid testing, we don't have a vaccine, we're back to where we were.

"I don't think we should necessarily criticise anyone for that, because it was always a question of get this under control, protect the NHS and move forward.

"There is cause for hope, there are green shoots of hope for vaccines and rapid testing, but we're not there yet."

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV at 6am.
