Nobby Solano identifies problem for Miguel Almiron at Newcastle United

Miguel Almiron has not managed to display his talent at Newcastle United because he has been 'defending more than attacking'.

That is the view of former Magpies' great Nobby Solano who believes Almiron is a great player who has come to Newcastle at a 'bad time'.

Almiron is currently out injured with a knee injury and while he was expected to be unavailable until April, Steve Bruce hinted the Paraguayan midfielder could be fit to return ahead of Saturday's crucial clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.

He had enjoyed a renaissance in 2021 after Bruce finally played Almiron in his favoured 'number 10' position and his performances reflected that.

Of course, the 26-year-old took the best part of a year to score his first United goal having been prolific for MLS outfit Atlanta United prior to his move to Tyneside but both Bruce and Rafa Benitez were big fans of his work-rate and energy both on and off the ball.

Almiron's agent Daniel Campos hinted earlier this season that his client was keen to play for a more attacking-minded side and Solano, too, is of the opinion that Almiron will flourish in a more offensive team.

“It’s tough to play in the Premier League, all teams are very competitive and everyone plays to win," Solano told Crónica, via Sport Witness.

"I was lucky enough to play for several teams, but where I was at Newcastle the most years, I know the club well.

“Miguel Almirón is a great player, but he came to Newcastle at a bad time. I see Miguel defending more than attacking, that is why he did not manage to display all his talent, because he is talented.”
