No10 to do three press conferences a week - but White House-style briefings delayed

Regular No10 press conferences will return from next week as England's national lockdown gets underway.

Downing Street confirmed that there will be at least three press conferences per week to keep the nation updated on the coronavirus pandemic.

But long-awaited plans for White House-style press briefings have been kicked into the long grass due to the latest lockdown.

Plans to televise daily lobby briefings - where political journalists can question the Prime Minister's spokesman - had been scheduled to start this month, led by the PM's new press secretary Allegra Stratton.

Instead, No10 said there would be a return to regular press conferences, led by Mr Johnson or other relevant ministers and scientific experts, for "the next few weeks".

Daily coronavirus briefings were a fixture of the first lockdown, with scientific experts such as Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance, the Chief Scientific Adviser, becoming household names.

No10 brought an end to the press conferences once the first lockdown was lifted but return to more regular briefings as the second wave hit in the autumn.

The Prime Minister has plunged England into its third national lockdown, which is expected to last until as least the middle of February.

MPs backed the lockdown laws in the Commons on Wednesday, which allow for the restrictions to extend to the end of March if necessary.

But ministers insisted that the lockdown measures would be reviewed in February, with Mr Johnson pinning his hopes on the mass rollout of the coronavirus vaccine.
