No10 gently knocks back Justin Trudeau’s claim UK facing ‘very serious’ Covid third wave

Downing Street gently knocked back Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim that the UK is facing a “very serious third wave” on Thursday.

Mr Trudeau made the comment and referred to the UK’s successful vaccine roll out as he tried to justify keeping tough restrictions on Canadians.

However, No10 today said the UK data “speaks for itself” when asked about the comments.

The Canadian PM has come under fire as coronavirus cases per capita overtake the US for the first time and the country faces a devastating third wave driven by new variants.

The premier told the Canadian parliament: “We know for example that the UK is ahead of just about everybody else on vaccinations and yet they maintain very strong restrictions and are facing a very serious third wave.

“Vaccinations on their own are not enough to keep us safe.”

However, Boris Johnson’s official spokesman told journalists: “I don’t have a specific response for Justin Trudeau but I think the case data speaks for itself with this.

“Case numbers are down and ditto for hospitalisations and deaths and that’s a tribute to our vaccine roll out and the work of the British public and our NHS.”
