No, you didn’t “discover” that actor, my guy. Millennial girlies have been there

Growing up a fan of movies means that sometimes you just know actors that no one else does. We are talking about your side characters who only you love. Sometimes, those actors go on to become big stars and when that happens, you feel untouchable.

Right now, that’s very much how being a Millennial woman feels. Specifically ones who have loved movies their entire lives. I’m talking about all us girlies who have known these actors taking on superhero roles or big blockbuster movies finally getting our time to shine.

This was inspired by a tweet that said “men will discover an actor the girls have been telling y’all for years and call him underrated.” The pictures included Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Robert Pattinson. All three of those actors have been beloved in my fandom spaces for a number of reasons, all for at least the last 2 decades. And in some cases, even longer.

Let’s take David Corenswet and use him as an example. Many of us suffered through Ryan Murphy’s The Politician because we loved River. I remember Hollywood. And even when he appeared in Twisters, I was like “That’s my guy”! The point is: We often tend to remember actors and love them for a lot longer than men.

It’s not a knock on men. I think that people I know just tend to consume media in a different way. When Robert Sheehan was cast on The Umbrella Academy, I yelled “Save me Barry” out loud as did most of us Millennials obsessed with actors and who had an unhealthy obsession with British television in high school and college.

Maybe listen to us more?

There are so many men who are now famous that we all knew about prior to their “hit” role. Glen Powell was Chad in Scream Queens, Pedro Pascal was in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Graceland before Game of Thrones. The point I am making is that we all know these guys and the fact that there are men in this world who “discover” an actor and think they’re teaching us something is…laughable.

Not all men do this. Some are in the trenches with the rest of us. We saw Robert Pattinson in Remember Me. We remember. But there are a lot who see an actor that is in a new movie and they think “wow this guy is really good” and have to tell everyone as if we did not already know. Those are the guys who don’t deserve to thrive like the rest of us.

But it is fun being a Millennial right now. So many of our favorites are taking over Hollywood. Sebastian Stan is everywhere, Jeremy Allen White is the talk of the town, Michael B. Jordan, Aldis Hodge, and Jesse Plemons are making the Dillon Panthers proud.

So if you think “wow this actor is great, why is no one talking about him?” Chances are that there is a devoted legion of fans who have been there for decades screaming their praise. So just…prepare for that.
