Graham Coughlan says he is unsure of Chris Lines will feature against Barnsley on Saturday.
The 33-year-old is a Rovers hero, having made over 300 appearances in two different spells at the Memorial Stadium, but has played just 23 times so far this season.
He has not made an appearance since the 2-0 defeat to Sunderland in the Checkatrade Trophy semi-final on March 5, but has featured for Rovers' development squad recently.
When asked if Lines would be able to make his 500th senior appearance in Rovers' final game of the season on Saturday, Coughlan said Lines was further away from the milestone than previously thought, and it was a difficult situation to be in.
He said: "I believe he's on 497 appearances but that's irrelevant anyway.
"There's a lot of good things happening at this football club.
"Those who got on the bus with me in December and were willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, I believe I have a duty to them this weekend.

"I believe I've also got a duty to the football club and to the dressing room to go and win a game of football.
"If Chris is involved and if he plays, that's well and good, but I ain't going to start making wholesale changes, I ain't going to make umpteen changes unnecessarily. Let's have a look how we shape up today and tomorrow and see what happens.
"I'm damned if I do, I'm damned if I don't, it's a no-win situation for me if I'm honest. It's not a nice situation to be in, let's be honest."
