No whistle this time: Saints defense forces, recovers fumble for long TD

The New Orleans Saints experienced a brief moment of déjà vu in their Week 3 game against the Seattle Seahawks, forcing a fumble out of their opponent before recovering the loose ball and streaking back towards the end zone for a defensive touchdown. The same thing happened a week ago for Saints defensive ends Trey Hendrickson and Cameron Jordan, only for an errant referee’s whistle piping in to take points off the board for New Orleans.

That wasn’t the case today. The officials stood back and let the play unfold before reviewing it with instant replay, and confirmed the ruling on the field. Saints cornerback Eli Apple punched the ball out of Seahawks running back Chris Carson’s arms, which was recovered by Saints safety Vonn Bell, who ran it back 33 yards for a touchdown. Saints coach Sean Payton was all smiles.

However, Wil Lutz’s extra-point attempt missed, swerving sharply left of the goalposts. The Saints lead the Seahawks 13-7.
