'No truth whatsoever' in claims Mark Drakeford is spending New Year's Eve in an English hotel

The Welsh Government has robustly denied reports that the First Minister is in England for New Year's Eve, following erroneous claims he was seen checking into a hotel in Bristol.

An individual posted a message on Facebook on Friday afternoon claiming to have seen Mark Drakeford checking into the Hilton Garden Inn, in Bristol city centre.

The original post was shared dozens of times on Facebook and was commented on by several people.

A screenshot of the original message was later posted on Twitter where it has been retweeted close to a thousand times with more than 1,500 likes in less than three hours. Some people replied and suggested that Mr Drakeford should resign from his post, while others refused to believe the claim.

In response to a request for comment on the claims, a Welsh Government spokesperson said: "There is no truth in this whatsoever. The First Minister is in Wales."

The original Facebook post from a member of the public read: "Dropping off here and guess who’s checking in - none other than Mark Drakeford and his wife having a night on the pop over the border."

There was no image, nor any supporting evidence, posted alongside the claims.

The restrictions introduced by Mr Drakeford and the Welsh Government on Boxing Day include the wearing of face masks in pubs and restaurants, table service across hospitality settings and a cap of six on the number of people who can meet.

Nightclubs are also not allowed to open in Wales.

None of the above restrictions are currently in force in England, and many people are expected to travel to England to bring in the new year.

Crossing the border to attend an event that is compliant with rules in England is allowed and there are no travel restrictions in force in Wales.
