'No truth' that Mark Drakeford is in Bristol amid Hilton Hotel check-in rumours

Rumours have been flying around social media that Mark Drakeford has checked into a Bristol hotel this afternoon, despite placing Wales under coronavirus restrictions from Boxing Day.

An individual took to social media to allege the First Minister of Wales was spotted checking into the Hilton Garden Inn, in Bristol City Centre this afternoon (December 31).

The post, shared on Facebook, has been shared thousands of times on various social media platforms calling for Mr Drakeford to reveal his location.

The original Facebook post from a member of the public read: "Dropping off here and guess who’s checking in - none other than Mark Drakeford and his wife having a night on the pop over the border."

There was no image, nor any supporting evidence, posted alongside the claims reports Wales Online.

Some people have replied and suggested that Mr Drakeford should resign from his post, while others refused to believe the claim.

However, a spokesperson for the Welsh Government has said: "There is no truth in this whatsoever. The First Minister is in Wales."

The restrictions introduced by Mr Drakeford and the Welsh Government on Boxing Day include the wearing of face masks in pubs and restaurants, table service across hospitality settings and a cap of six on the number of people who can meet.

Nightclubs are also not allowed to open in Wales.

None of the above restrictions are currently in force in England, and many people are expected to travel to England to bring in the new year.

However, Boris Johnson is considering bringing in further coronavirus restrictions to England in 2022.

Crossing the border to attend an event that is compliant with rules in England is allowed and there are no travel restrictions in force in Wales.
