It was expected that the Scottish full back would have made his Premier League debut at Old Trafford after returning from injury and impressing in the Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest. The defender's absence from the U23 side against Liverpool was an indication that he would be involved.

However, ahead of the match against Manchester United, news of Tierney's absence began to trickle through. The 22-year-old was not included in the early squad that was released before the match.

Another two players who have not been included includes midfielder Mesut Ozil and Hector Bellerin.
