No ticket? How to experience the Commonwealth Games for free

If you missed out on Commonwealth Games tickets there are still a number of free events where you can see athletes in action.

In athletics, the race walks and the marathon are free to watch, and in cycling the road race and time trial are both free if you are willing to line up along the route.

Where can I watch the action on the big screen?

If you don't want to line the streets but still want to feel the atmosphere of the Games, there are a few places you can watch on a big screen.

Chinatown at Southport is hosting the "CBD street party" that will have a big screen showing the Games, as well as live music and performances each day from midday to 10:00pm.

On Wednesday, April 4, the Opening Ceremony will be screened at the Main Stage in Surfers Paradise and at Broadbeach Mall.

Most sports bars in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast will also be showing the action on big screens.

But I hate sport. What else can I do?

The Commonwealth Games cultural festival — "Festival 2018" — has plenty of free events and exhibitions featuring comedy, theatre, art, music and food across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville.

Giant karaoke sing-alongs will take place each day, with a field of microphones planted on Surfers Paradise beach along with a giant screen featuring words to popular songs.

Internationally-acclaimed UK artist Luke Jerram will bring the "Museum of the Moon" to Southport.

He will showcase a 7-metre wide floating moon sculpture detailed with NASA imagery.

In Brisbane, music fans can catch free shows from Regurgitator, The Creases, The Preatures and Bob Evans.

There'll also be a chance to belt out a song or two with the increasingly popular Pub Choir.

NightQuarter at Helensvale is having its own festival as part of the arts and culture program.

There will be food trucks where you can try traditional bush tucker, and a masterclass with a cheese expert to rate how Australian cheese stacks up against the best in the world.

And if all of that is making you thirsty, some pubs across the state are planning to broadcast the opening ceremony, while nightclubs in Brisbane are planning 'wear activewear' events, and 'Bar Games' nights.
