'No threat to patient safety': Latest on fire that caused evacuation of Bristol hospital

Fire crews attended a "small" fire at a hospital in Bristol this afternoon (January 21), causing the evacuation of staff and patients.

The fire at St Michael's Hospital in Southwell Street was reported by Avon Fire and Rescue Service just before 1pm with the service confirming that crews from Bedminster, Temple, Kingswood and Southmead were at the scene.

The building was evacuated as the fire was tackled.

Shortly before 2pm, Avon Fire updated on social media that the fire had been extinguished.

It was also confirmed amid the updates that police and ambulance crews had attended the scene, but no injuries were reported.

Pictures from the scene showed a number of engines on the scene as crews went to work on the flames, with a number of people standing outside the hospital.

It has now been confirmed that all patients and staff have returned to the hospital and that there was "no threat to patient safety" at any point.

Dr Mark Smith, deputy chief executive and chief operating officer at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, said nobody was injured in the fire and that the evacuation had been a precaution, which has now been lifted.

He said: "We can confirm there was a small fire involving an appliance which was contained to a non-patient room at St Michael’s Hospital this afternoon.

"Nobody was injured but as a precaution and in line with our fire safety protocols staff and patients were evacuated from the building for a short period. At no point was there a threat to patient safety.

"The fire was quickly dealt with and patients have returned to the hospital. We would like to thank our fantastic staff and the emergency services for their swift action to minimise the impact."
