Police cordoned off the road near Seamon's Moss Bridge (STEVE ALLEN)

Her family has been informed and a file has been passed to the coroner.

Detective Inspector Nicola Walton, of GMP's Trafford district, said: "Our thoughts and condolences are with the woman's family but we are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death."

A large police cordon was in place for several hours on Tuesday with crime scene investigators pictured carrying out specialist work at the scene.

The woman's body was discovered at around 6am (STEVE ALLEN)

The cordon was in place on Oldfield Road, which stretches to either side of Seamon's Moss Bridge and over to Seamon's Road.

The bridge runs over the Bridgewater Canal.

Several police cars were stationed at the scene and police tape was put up across the road.

One resident who lives nearby told the M.E.N. it was a big shock when she found out what had happened.

"Neither myself nor my neighbours saw or heard anything untoward so it's a big shock and very, very sad", she said.

"My thoughts are with her family."
