No surprise: Vikings decline WR Laquon Treadwell’s 5th-year option

We all saw this coming.

A day ahead of the deadline, the Vikings declined the fifth-year option on former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell.

After being selected at No. 23 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Treadwell has struggled to find a role in Minnesota. His best season came in 2018 when he caught 35 passes for 302 yards and one touchdown. The fact that that’s his best season is all you really need to know.

Treadwell’s fifth-year option would have been $10.1 million. Picking that up would have been insane for general manager Rick Spielman.

The Vikings signed Jordan Taylor this offseason and picked two receivers in the seventh round of last week’s draft, hoping one of the three can challenge Treadwell for the WR3 spot behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs.
