You’re forgiven if your reaction is, “well, duh”. Mayfield set the NFL record for TD passes by a rookie in just 13 games and posted six wins as a starter on a team that has won more than five games in a season just once since 2007.
Moreover, Mayfield showed outstanding leadership and wasn’t afraid of challenging the “Factory of Sadness” mentality that had pervaded for far too long.
Honestly, who else could it be? With quarterback being the most important position in professional sports, and with the Browns failing badly on two first-round efforts since 2011 (Brandon Weeden and someone we refuse to name), just one year of Mayfield is qualifying enough to earn the top spot.
