No-spin question only relevant had Aussies lost: Smith

Playing without a specialist spinner at Australia's most spin-friendly venue was justified in the victory obtained in the final Ashes Test, Steve Smith says.

But the captain conceded had his men lost the final Ashes Test, there would have been understandable scrutiny on the decision to leave out tweaker Todd Murphy.

"It is now, we're standing here winning right?" Smith responded when asked whether the lack of a spinner was justified.

"Had we not, there's obviously maybe a bit to answer for there potentially, but you've got to weigh up how you think the game's going to pan out."

The decision to play the extra allrounder in Beau Webster to lengthen the batting line-up paid dividends in helping Australia rack up a big first-innings lead.

However, Smith admitted they slightly misread how the pitch would play later in the game when spin would have the greatest effect.

"We thought the cracks were going to open up quicker than they did, and the rough wasn't going to be as prevalent as it was," he said.

"But in terms of the wicket, I think it's one of, if not the best I've seen in my 15 years playing here."

Smith himself was undone by a big spinning delivery from largely luckless Will Jacks late on day five after an off-break ripped between bat and pad to hit his stumps.

With Nathan Lyon set for a lengthy lay-off recovering from the hamstring tear he suffered in Adelaide and Murphy yet to play a home test, questions around Australia's spin future remain.

But after 70 not out and three crucial second-innings wickets bowling off-spin, it seems likely Webster will continue to be part of Australia's plans.
