No Spartans selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft

Well, this was always a possibility. It has been acknowledged for months now that this was not going to be a strong year for Spartans in the NFL Draft, but I will admit this result has me somewhat surprised.

When the Second Round of the NFL Draft ended with the Seattle Seahawks selecting D.K. Metcalf out of Ole Miss, it became official that no Michigan State players had been selected in the first two rounds of this year’s NFL Draft.

This came as a surprise because Mel Kiper Jr. had recently said that he thought it was possible that Justin Layne could creep into the First Round. I recently called him a ‘lock’ for the Second Round, which you can go ahead and send to Freezing Cold Takes if you’d like.

I think the analysts could be confused about this as well, as Justin Layne has been listed as Mel Kiper Jr.’s top prospect on the board for a few selections now, and Khari Willis is in the top ten of that list as well.

I haven’t been able to find anything on why Justin Layne could be falling. He projects as the prototypical NFL cornerback, and I thought it was pretty likely that Khari Willis could go in the second round.

One thing is for sure, whatever team drafts one of those guys in the third round will be getting a steal.
