'No sleeping allowed by order of the Peaky Blinders': Residents kept awake by 'gunfire' as filming gets underway

The cobbled streets of Castlefield have been transformed into 1930s Birmingham as Peaky Blinders once again begins filming in Manchester.

But while the return of Tommy Shelby and his gang has got many fans excited, the actual film set was causing some issues for locals last night.

Shortly after Paul Anderson, who plays Arthur Shelby, was spotted strolling around the cobbles, what sounds like a dramatic scene began filming.

Although the set has been well-concealed from public view to avoid any spoilers or plot leaks, nothing could keep the sound of fake gunfire from echoing around the streets.

One user on Twitter remarked: "They're filming Peaky Blinders in Castlefield and there's a machine gun going off every 10 minutes. I'm tryna sleep man."

Someone else commented: "No sleeping allowed by order of the Peaky Blinders!!!!"

Other Castlefield locals who went out last night to try and get a glimpse of the film set in action posted videos online.

In one, the gruff Birmingham accent of Arthur can clearly be heard shouting, before an eruption of what sounds like machine gun fire.

Someone observed that it sounds 'like Arthur shooting the absolute s*** out of someone.'

In previous years, the crew have staged political rallies outside the Plaza in Stockport, funeral processions around Princess Streets, and gun fights in the Northern Quarter and at London Road Fire Station.

And although the series is set in Birmingham, crews have also made use of Victoria Baths, Arley Hall and Rochdale Town Hall.

Work started on the Castlefield set several weeks ago, with the front of the Garrison Tavern and other period-style shop fronts built on Duke Street.

No one seems to have spotted star of the show, Cillian Murphy, in Manchester yet - but all eyes are peeled.
