'No significant incidents' - police thank public following Super Saturday

Police in Bristol have thanked people after "no significant incidents" on so-called "Super Saturday".

Some pubs and bars reopened for the first time after 100-plus days of coronavirus lockdown.

And a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary paid tribute to the behaviour of the vast majority of people who went out.

He said: "We’d like to thank all those who visited our towns and cities yesterday as licenced premises reopened for the first time in more than three months.

"Plans had been put in place to respond to an increase in demand for our services but we’re pleased to say there were no significant incidents.

"COVID-19 still presents a deadly threat and we’re grateful to all those who continue to take a personal responsibility to help control the virus.

Social distance clinking (Jake McPherson SWNS)

There were scenes of carnage across England last night as eager revellers whooped it up for the first time in nearly four months.

The day the pubs and bars were allowed to reopen - with social distancing due to coronavirus pandemic - was dubbed "Super Saturday".

Despite the relaxation of restrictions, some 30 per cent of bars, pubs and restaurants in the UK have actually stayed shut, according to the Night-Time Industries Association, amid fears for safety and concerns over how to implement social distancing guidance.

Campaign for Real Ale national chairman Nik Antona said: "The government have not really been helpful with their guidance, leaving it to the last minute in a lot of cases."

Some pubs "want to see what's going to happen" before opening their doors, he said.

Photographers were able to snap messy scenes in Leeds, where police officers assessed a woman passed out on the pavement and staggering lads rested against structures to remain upright.

In London's Soho there were joyful people celebrating and engaging closely with those around them.

Bristol made the most of lockdown easing, too.

The only incident raised by the force today (July 5) was a street party in Brook Lane, Montpelier, which disturbed several residents including.

Police broke the party up at 1.30am.
