Police divers locate body and helicopter wreckage off Port Hedland

Several aircraft combed over more than 1,000 square kilometres of ocean looking for the pilot.

Police divers have located the body believed to be that of a helicopter pilot who crashed off the coast of Port Hedland on Wednesday night.

Sonar imaging equipment detected the wreckage of the helicopter around 12:30pm on Saturday and divers attended the site 35 kilometres from shore and found the body inside.

Police said a formal identification process was underway and next of kin had been notified.

A report will be prepared for the coroner and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will also investigate the crash.

Maritime safety officials have ended their search for a pilot who is missing and presumed dead after his helicopter crashed into the sea off the coast of Port Hedland in northern WA.

Two pilots were on board the Eurocopter EC-135, operated by Aviator Group subsidiary Mackay Helicopters, when it ditched into the water 35 kilometres north of Port Hedland just before midnight on Wednesday.

One man was rescued from a life raft about 1:00am, but there were no sightings of the other pilot during an extensive two-day search.

The rescued pilot was taken to Port Hedland Hospital with minor injuries and has since been discharged.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said several vessels and aircraft had systematically searched an area of more than 1,000 square kilometres, revisiting some areas several times.

"Weather conditions for searching were good and there was a high probability that a survivor in the water would have been detected," an AMSA spokeswoman said.

"AMSA extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the missing pilot."

Aviator Group has confirmed one of the pilots was a trainee.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation into the incident is continuing.
