No second UK emergency alert taking place today, Government confirms

There will not be a second emergency alert test today despite earlier reports saying another was due. People on the internet had spotted a message on the Government's website which said another test was due "today", but this has since been confirmed as false by the Cabinet Office.

It comes after the first test of the new system was carried out at 3pm on Sunday (April 23). However, it did not work on some phones while others received the message hours after it was sent.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, the alert was supposed to send a message notification to all 4G and 5G phones as well as a 10-second alarm. A screengrab taken by the MEN from the official government website, Gov.uk, showed a post saying that "a service test of the UK Emergency Alerts system" would take place today, Tuesday, April 25.

However, it is now understood that the message was not meant to be uploaded. Instead, it related to an internal operator test which would not be sent to the public.

The Government has made it clear this evening (April 25) that no public test of the emergency alert system was ever scheduled to take place today. They added that the website message was put up in error.

The original message on the site read: "This is a mobile network operator test of the UK Emergency Alerts service. You do not need to take any action. To find out more, visit gov.uk/alerts."

The Cabinet Office has since tweeted that the alert will not be taking place today. They said: "There are media reports claiming the Government is testing the #EmergencyAlerts system again today.

"This is completely untrue. There are no plans to test system again."

The alert system is designed to notify people should an emergency situation arise locally, such as flooding or wildfire.
