No, Ryan Tannehill won’t start over Titans QB Marcus Mariota

Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson has made it plainly clear that there will be no quarterback competition in Nashville since the day he signed former Miami Dolphins signal-caller Ryan Tannehill.

Even so, there has been plenty of buzz amongst the fan base and some analysts about the possibility of Tannehill pushing Mariota and making a run for the starting role.

Tannehill’s purpose is to serve as an essentially overqualified insurance policy — nothing more and nothing less.

Head coach Mike Vrabel reaffirmed this idea this week.

Mariota’s  “job is not in jeopardy. I don’t think that’s something we’re even here to talk about.”

Of course, Mariota will need to stay healthy all season and continuously perform at a high level to secure a contract extension as he’s on the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, but he stands no chance at losing his job ahead of the season.

The former Oregon quarterback isn’t concerned about what others think of his chances, either.

“Other people’s opinions don’t matter to me,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

Mariota is going to continue preparing the way he has every other season since he entered the league, and hope for the the best outcome.

”Let it ride,” he said. ”I mean no matter what still I get to come out here. I get to play a game that I love and I’m going to make the most of it.

Aside from the one the internet has created, there is no quarterback controversy in Tennessee.
