No room on the ranch

If José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Spanish prime minister, needed further proof that he is unwelcome in George Bush's Washington, he just needs to look at those among his countrymen who are.

King Juan Carlos will visit the Bush ranch in Texas for Thanksgiving, and Jos&eacute María Aznar, the former prime minister, was the re-elected president's first overseas guest at the White House. As yet, Mr Bush has not returned Mr Zapatero's telephone call congratulating him on his election win. A spokesman said he would eventually get round to it.

Relations have been poor since Mr Zapatero – a leftwinger - won the general election and pulled Spanish troops out of Iraq, to considerable US disgust. Today's International Herald Tribune looks at his attempts to reach out to the US, and why they appear not to be succeeding.
