No rookie minicamp for Jets following 2019 draft

With a new coaching staff, the Jets are changing some things up at Florham Park.

New York will not hold its annual rookie minicamp following the commencement of the NFL draft, according to the team’s offseason workout program. Following the ending of the 2019 NFL draft, the Jets will instead host a four-day rookie orientation from May 9-12 at the team facilities in Florham Park.

This change is in the opposite direction of what the Jets have done in the past. Rather than practice for three days, rookies will learn the playbook and new-look offense instead.

Last season, the Jets ran a three-day rookie minicamp, hosting 44 different tryout players.

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team may hold one post-draft rookie minicamp on either the first or second weekend following the NFL draft. Minicamp gives drafted and undrafted players the opportunity to get immersed with the playbook and get a feel for the NFL before training camp begins.

This is nothing new for Adam Gase, however. He took this exact same approach when he first started with the Miami Dolphins in 2016.

In his first offseason workout program in Miami, Gase did not have rookies participate in practice during the team’s rookie orientation.

Presumably, Gase would rather have his rookies learn the playbook in the classroom rather than risk injuries during rookie minicamp. His unorthodox approach could become the new norm as he looks to start off his Jets tenure on a high note.
