'No question' - Former ref blasts key Simon Hooper decision in Crystal Palace vs Burnley clash

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett says Joachim Andersen was lucky not to receive a red card against Burnley for his last-man tackle on Chris Wood on Saturday.

Andersen brought the Clarets striker to the ground on the edge of his own box in the 53rd minute at Turf Moor, with the match poised at 3-3 following Maxwell Cornet's stunning equaliser less than five minutes earlier.

Referee Simon Hooper ignored calls for the foul on Wood, and a likely card for Andersen, however, which would have ruled the centre-back out of the Eagles next game against Aston Villa.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche labelled the decision of Hooper not to blow his whistle for a foul as bizarre, and ex-ref Hackett completely agreed.

"First of all, what concerned me about this was that it was a foul, no question,” he told Football Insider.

"It fulfilled the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity in every criterion; direction towards goal, the position of defenders – they’re not going to come in – and probability of controlling the ball. Yes, they’re all there. It’s a red card.

"He’s doesn’t blow for the free-kick and I’m thinking ‘When’s the red card coming?’ It didn’t, so then I’m thinking ‘When’s the VAR coming in?’ It didn’t.

"It was a pretty poor piece of officiation. Burnley and Sean Dyche had a real case for a moan afterwards."

The incident, and Dyche's reaction to it, was shown as part of BBC One's Match of the Day coverage of the game, with pundit Alan Shearer agreeing with the Burnley boss on the matter.

"I agree absolutely with Sean Dyche," said Shearer. "Andersen v Wood one v one, the assistant is there but the referee Simon Hooper is miles away.

"That is a foul all day for me, as Sean Dyche said he's got two hands on him, he is clean through on goal and the assistant can see it and is up with play and he should be telling the referee that it is a foul and a red card."
