No pylons here, but pylons there

Electricity pylons in Dorset

Three cheers to National Grid for agreeing to remove lines of unsightly electricity pylons, using a new “undergrounding” fund (Report, 15 September). This will restore beautiful views in the New Forest, Peak District, Snowdonia and Dorset. However, in a classic case of disjointed policymaking, the same company is proposing to build a 15-mile line of pylons across another iconic landscape, the Lake District. These pylons would be as high as Nelson’s Column and would be an undoubted blot on the landscape as well as a good candidate for future dismantling through the fund. Surely it would be better to underground them now, protect the view and save millions for the public purse?
