The mayor of a Hokkaido town that is considering applying to become a candidate as a final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste met on Thursday with Hokkaido Gov. Naomichi Suzuki, who opposes the plan.
In the meeting with Suttsu Mayor Haruo Kataoka at the municipal government office, Suzuki explained a prefectural ordinance stipulating that such waste is deemed "difficult to accept."
Suzuki also said that although the first step in the selection process, which involves a review of documents, will "not lead directly to the town's acceptance as a final disposal site, it goes against the point of the ordinance."
In response, Kataoka sought understanding regarding the town's applying to be a candidate.
"This is not a debate about whether or not to build a final disposal site, but rather an opportunity for everyone to gain more facts on the subject."
However, the meeting ended without any progress.
