No plans for disposable nappy tax, says Government

The Government has denied claims it may introduce a tax on disposable nappies.

The Daily Mail and other news outlets reported that parents faced a 'new nappy tax' and that the Government 'may introduce a levy on disposable brands to tackle landfill crisis'.

However, the reports were swiftly dismissed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

In a tweet sent just hours after the Mail published its story online, Defra said: "The Daily Mail story on disposable nappies is not true - there are no plans to place a tax on nappies."

An estimated three billion nappies are thrown away every year in the UK.

The majority are not recyclable, so they usually end up in landfill or are burnt.

In 2018, the Environment Secretary Michael Gove hinted at a future ban. He later clarified his comments to say that nappies wouldn't be banned but suggested they could be part of plans to "tackle waste better".

The main alternatives to disposable nappies are cloth nappies that can be washed and reused or biodegradable nappies.
