No new Covid restrictions before New Year says Health Secretary

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said no further Covid restrictions will be introduced in England before the new year but “people should remain cautious”.

He asked for people to consider testing and ventilation when planning New year's celebrations.

Mr Javid said: "There will be no further measures before the New Year.

"We won't be taking any further measures.

"Of course people should remain cautious as we approach New Year celebrations."

"Take a lateral flow test if that makes sense, celebrate outside if you can, have some ventilation indoors if you can.

"When we get into the New Year of course we will see then if we need to take any other measures."

The Health Secretary also urged people once again to come forward for vaccinations.

He added: "Since we learned about Omicron our strategy has been to buy time. Two vaccines aren't quite enough but three doses is excellent protection

"Please do come forward and get vaccinated, protect yourselves, protect your loved ones and protect you communities.

"It has never been so easy."

Partial Covid data was published for the Christmas period on December 27.

Figures show that the number of cases has remained high, with 113,628 infections reported in England on Christmas Day.

Some 103,558 cases were recorded in England on 26 December and 98,515 on 27 December.
