No new coronavirus cases confirmed in Bolton for the first time in months

No new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Bolton yesterday.

It is the first time since March 16 that the town has gone 24 hours without a positive test being registered on the official figures.

The number of people who have contracted Covid-19 across the borough remains at 1,001, according to data from Public Health England.

Trafford was the only other area of Greater Manchester to not see a rise in confirmed cases yesterday, with the total number of people infected by the disease around the region increasing by 52 to reach 9,748.

While the number of confirmed new infections did not increase, NHS staff are still treating many patients with coronavirus.

Yesterday, it was announced that four more patients who tested positive for Covid-19 have died at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

It means that a total of 209 coronavirus patients have died at the hospital during the pandemic.

The 1,001 confirmed cases in the town means there is an infection rate of around 351 positive tests per 100,000 of the population, which is the sixth highest among the ten Greater Manchester boroughs.

The lack of new instances of the virus is a positive sign and is in line with gradually falling figures from across the country.

Figures released this week by the Office of National Statistics roughly 2,500 people have died of coronavirus-related conditions around Greater Manchester.

These are based on the number of deaths registered up to May 23, where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

They are higher than equivalent NHS England - which show that as of Tuesday, May 26, 1,756 people have died in our region's hospitals with Covid-19 - because they take into account deaths which occurred outside of hospitals
