No new cases of COVID-19 in the Hunter

Hunter New England Health has confirmed there were no new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the region in the past 24 hours, extending the Hunter's run without a positive test result to almost a week.

NSW Health had announced on Wednesday that 18 new cases were detected across the state in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday.

The majority of those cases were recorded in Greater Sydney and only two were not linked to existing outbreaks.

The most recent case of coronavirus in the Hunter New England local health district was reported almost a week ago on Thursday, August 6.

That case was the third member of a Newcastle family to contract the virus.

Despite thousands of tests in the days since, there have been no further cases in the region.

That hasn't stopped the Hunter community taking extra levels of precaution, with face masks now a common sight across the region.

However, Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned on Wednesday that further measures might be introduced if the the use of masks and or social distancing decreases.

She highlighted the hospitality industry and said authorities would "take further action" if more businesses did not register their COVID safe plans.

Hunter New England Health had reported traces of COVID-19 being found in the Burwood Beach sewage treatment plant earlier this week.
