CHANDIGARH: Punjab water resources minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Sunday said the department was prepared to deal with any untoward situation due to the increased water level in reservoirs caused by continuous rain in hilly areas and Punjab.
The minister visited the banks of the seasonal Ghaggar river at several places during the day, following which he said the situation was under control and there was no need to panic.
Hayer said preparations had already been made his department on instructions from chief minister Bhagwant Mann. He added all officers and employees of the department had been posted in the field to monitor the water level of seasonal rivers, tributaries and canals. A flood control room has also been established at the head office level, he added.
Flood control rooms have also been established in all districts of the state. All field functionaries had been conveying updates to other departmets to ensure district administrations are on the alert in case there is a ned to act, he added.
The minister said that as far as dams were concerned, a satisfactory buffer was available till the maximum level of dams. Hayer also appealed to people to stay in touch with their respective deputy commissioner office so that they can get help in case of an emergency. Directions have already been issued to district administrations to keep empty cement bags on standby in case of an eventuality, he said.
