'No need' - Shoppers seriously offended by Marks & Spencer's new hot cross buns

You barely get a chance to catch your breath after Christmas, when Easter eggs start appearing on the shelves but one product in particular is getting shoppers riled.

The hot cross bun is very much a part of British culture, traditionally eaten on Good Friday, so maybe it's not surprising that people are protective of its reputation.

A conventional hot cross bun is made up of delicious sweet spiced bun with raisins or currants, a generous glazing of sugar and the signature white cross marked on top...unless you're Marks & Spencer.

The company revealed its new "flavour" on social media yesterday, writing : "Hello new flavour alert! These are not just hot cross buns… These are NEW Chilli and Cheese Hot Cross Buns. Visit us in store to toast the start of the Easter season."

They also include cheddar cheese, caramelised and dried fried onions, dried peppers and spices with Worcester and hot pepper sauces.

But M&S didn't quite get the reception that they had been hoping for, with comments from disgruntled shoppers pouring in.

One user wrote on Twitter: "Leave traditional hot cross buns alone. No need to invent the wheel. There are plenty of other savoury buns you could make! No need for it."

One person simply asked: "But why?".

"Shouldn't be allowed, REAL Hot Cross Buns should not have any of these faddy flavourings," slammed somebody else.

Another said: "That’s not a hot cross bun. It’s a cheese roll. Stop it."

However, others weren't quite so harsh  and some were even looking forward to try the new controversial bun.

Steven said: "They sound really nice, you still have the option of buying regular hot Cross buns, choice is a good thing. Stop whinging."

Meanwhile, a Fifer even asked: "Can the Dunfermline store please get these? They have the worst range of any M&S I've been in."

"Tried these today, can confirm they’re delicious", said Sophie on Twitter.
