No need for Hugo Lloris to apologise following Champions League red, insists Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino insists there was no need for Hugo Lloris to apologise after his late red card in their Champions League draw at PSV.

Tottenham were leading 2-1 in Eindhoven when captain Lloris rushed out of his goal, lunged at Hirving Lozano and was dismissed for his challenge.

The hosts then went on to equalise leaving Pochettino's side an almost impossible task in qualifying from their group.

However, when asked if the Frenchman had apologised after the game, Pochettino insisted there was no need.

"No, why? No, no, no, no," he said.

"One day when I was very young one manager said to me you don't need to apologise after I made a big mistake, because only the player on the pitch can make a mistake.

"If I am sitting here, sitting in the dugout, it's difficult to make a mistake. Football is about making mistakes.

"But in that case it wasn't a mistake, it was an action that happens a lot in football and is a sending-off. Hugo doesn't need to apologise to myself or the team. It is an action that happens often and sometimes football is like this."

Pochettino added: "I'm not going to blame any player. If someone wants to blame a person, it's myself to blame because I am responsible for the team. We didn't win. If someone wants to blame someone blame me, not the players."

Tottenham now face an uphill battle to make it out of their group, with PSV and Inter Milan at Wembley to come before travelling to Barcelona in November.
