No more phone boxes!

Nine phone boxes in West Lothian are to be removed.

Nationally there will be 650 taken out of service but BT stressed it was not proposing the removal of any payphones on the Scottish islands or in areas where there was no mobile coverage.

A BT spokesperson said: “Most people now have a mobile phone and calls made from our public telephones have fallen by around 90 per cent in the past decade.

“As part of the consultation we are also offering communities the chance to adopt phone boxes for just £1 through our Adopt a Kiosk scheme and transform them into something inspirational for their local area. In Scotland alone nearly 400 have already been adopted.

“The need to provide payphones for use in emergency situations is also diminishing all the time, with at least 98 per cent of the UK having either 3G or 4G coverage. This is important because as long as there is network coverage, it is now possible to call the emergency services, even when there is no credit or no coverage from your own mobile provider.”

West Lothian has already been part of the Adopt a Kiosk scheme with ten kiosks having been adapted to date, for a variety of purposes, such as the defibrillator at Linlithgow High Street. A further five are still available for adoption in the area.

The phone boxes earmarked for closure in the West Lothian are: Watt Avenue, Armadale; Main Street, Blackridge; Main Street, Fauldhouse; Lanrigg Road, Fauldhouse; Birniehill Road, Bathgate; Kirk Road, Bathgate, Sycamore Walk, Bathgate; Chapelton Gardens, Polbeth and Market Street, Mid Calder.
