No Metrowater for 5 days, Mogappair residents struggle

CHENNAI: Residents of Mogappair East have been left without Metrowater supply for the last five days. Residents of Venugopal Street, EB Road, and Church Road rued that Metrowater was not flowing into their houses for the past five days. “Complaints to the Metrowater authorities have fallen on deaf ears. Every day, the staff tell us the supply will resume but it does not,” said R Raman of Panner Nagar Welfare Association.

Since the underground water is saline in Mogappair, residents are fully dependent on Metrowater for their daily requirements. “We have hired private tankers temporarily for the last few days, which costs ₹800 per load of water,” he said. Jhanshi, another resident from EB Road, said even during last summer, there was no supply. “We are managing with saline water for now,” she said.

When contacted, councillor for ward 92, K V Thilagar, said there was an underground pipe rupture near Nolambur from where the supply comes to Mogappair. “I have been pressuring the Metrowater officials daily to expedite the work fast. I am also physically inspecting the repair works where the pipe was damaged. The supply will be restored in two days,” he said.

Metrowater officials with ward 92 said there was a rupture 15 feet below the ground level at the Nolambur point. “We had to dig up the road and finish the work. It has been completed. We will restore it by Tuesday,” said an official.
