No matter who is owner of Newcastle United next season - they must build a team around one man

Newcastle United need to build a team around Allan Saint-Maximin.

Whether that is under new owners or the current regime, the French winger is a very special talent who has proved to be the difference in the last couple of seasons.

When Saint-Maximin is on song, Newcastle reap the rewards and for all the late season talk that the Magpies will be lucky to hold on to the winger next season it would be a major own goal if they decided to cash in on the ex-Nice man.

The final whistle had barely been blown at Anfield on Saturday afternoon and North-West based journalists were talking about Saint-Maximin in the Press box.

One of them stated quickly: "Newcastle will be lucky to hold on to him this summer."

But the positive news from a Toon point of view is that Newcastle moved quickly last autumn to tie Saint-Maximin down to a new deal.

As one of the top earners he can be the big star at St James' Park and not miss out on the riches on offer around Europe or the Premier League.

Despite winning the Chronicle's player of the season last term and performing well in the reduced campaign he's had this year caused by Covid and injuries, the scary thing is we are yet to see Saint-Maximin at his very best in a black and white jersey.

At 24 he is still three or four seasons away from his peak years but Newcastle need to show some ambition and put three or four players around him that improve the squad.

In Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson, Newcastle already have a three-pronged attack that are capable of troubling ANY Premier League club on their day.

Throw in a creative midfielder and another wide player who can complement that trio and Newcastle can transform a bottom half finish into the top 10 next season.

True, the coming window will be a test for the Magpies with limited funds set to be pushed in front of Steve Bruce this summer.

However, if Bruce uses the loan window as well as he has for Joe Willock's signing and Newcastle can make the money they do have work well, it doesn't have to be a gloomy season ahead as long as they hold on to Saint-Maximin.

No matter who is the owner the French winger clearly has what it takes to make things tick for the much-maligned Magpies.
