No Leeds seats included in 'Remain alliance' election pact

Competition for the eight parliamentary seats in Leeds will be as fierce as ever in December's General Election, as none of them have been included in the pro-remain electoral pact.

Pro-remain candidates representing The Liberal Democrats, The Green Party or Plaid Cymru will not compete against each other in 60 seats across England and Wales.

The parties have agreed to form an electoral alliance which will give one pro-remain party a free run in each constituency.

Liberal Democrats leader Jo Swinson said: "I am delighted that this arrangement will help elect more pro-remain MPs in the next Parliament."

Under the current agreement, The Liberal Democrats will not be opposed by the other two parties in 43 seats. The Green Party been assigned 10 seats and Plaid Cymru has seven.

The agreement, which was made under the banner of a cross-party group called Unite to Remain, does not include Labour. It covers 49 seats in England and 11 in Wales.

None of the parliamentary seats included in the pact are in Leeds, which was polarised during the Brexit referendum in 2016 (49.7 per cent voted Leave and 50.3 per cent voted Remain).

Ms Swinson added: “In the 43 seats agreed today, as well as hundreds more across the country, it is clear that the Liberal Democrats are the strongest party of Remain.

“A vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit, so that we can invest the £50bn Remain bonuses in our public services and build a brighter future.”
