No handshake for Theresa May as she welcomes Donald Trump to Downing Street

Outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May and US president Donald Trump failed to shake hands during an uncomfortable moment outside 10 Downing Street.

The visiting president warmly greeted Mrs May's husband Philip, while First Lady Melania exchanged pleasantries with both Mr and Mrs May.

But there was no contact between the PM and Mr Trump with both keeping their hands by their side as they acknowledged one another.

The awkward greeting highlighted the difficult relationship between Mrs May and the President.

It has chilled even further in recent weeks with disagreements over Chinese telecoms firm Huawei being involved with the UK's 5G network and other issues like climate change and sanctions against Iran also on the agenda.

The US President and Mrs May had met earlier in the day prior to the talks at Downing Street, which may explain why both opted not to shake hands for the cameras.

But the cool greeting was a far cry from their first meeting as leaders when the pair famously held hands as they strolled through the gardens of the White House.

The episode wasn't the President's first awkward handshake moment during his three-day visit to the UK.

He appeared to 'fist bump' the Queen when he arrived at Buckingham Palace yesterday. Mr Trump seemed to clench the Monarch's hand rather than shaking in a formal fashion.
