NOIDA: Ganga jal supply in Noida and the trans-Hindon areas of Ghaziabad will remain suspended for about a month from October 15 due to the annual desilting and cleaning of the Upper Ganga canal, officials have said. However, the Noida Authority has assured residents that there will be no shortage of water in the city.
“We will source water from renny wells and tubewells during this period. There will be a shortage of 60 cusecs of Ganga jal during the one-month desilting period, but we will not have problems with the supply of water in the city,” an Authority official told TOI. The Ganga jal will be restored on November 14.
Residents, however, complained about the lack of preparations by the Authority to provide treated groundwater to homes.
“The annual cleaning of the Upper Ganga canal would lead to Ganga jal shortage for a month. During this period, the Authority plans to supply groundwater in Noida whose TDS (total dissolved salt) levels is around 1,500, which is neither suitable for drinking nor for washing or bathing,” said a resident of Sector 77.
“The Authority should have made advance arrangements to treat this groundwater in preparations for the Ganga jal shutdown period. Every year, we raise this issue but to no avail,” he added.
Amit Gupta, RWA president of Prateek Wisteria in Sector 77, said the Authority had floated a tender for the treatment of groundwater about seven months back but it’s yet to be allotted. “We request the CEO of the Noida Authority to get the treatment of groundwater done on priority,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Authority on Monday floated a tender for Rs 2.21 crore for the feasibility study, consultancy services for survey, planning, and conceptualising solutions for efficient operations of renny wells and tubewells with water security plans for Noida.
