No further action taken on Crystal Palace fan banner against Newcastle’s Saudi takeover, police confirm

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed no further action will be taken following a complaint against a banner flown by Crystal Palace fans ahead of their game with Newcastle.

A display made by Eagles supporters in the Holmesdale Road Stand before Saturday’s 1-1 draw protested against the Magpies’ takeover by a Saudi-led consortium, following accusations against the country’s human rights record.

An investigation was subsequently opened after the police received “a report of an offensive banner”. On Monday, the Met confirmed the end of their inquiries.

A statement by Croydon MPS read: “On Saturday, a member of the public contacted us to raise concerns about a banner displayed at the Crystal Palace vs Newcastle match at Selhurst Park.

“Following an assessment, officers have concluded that no offences have been committed. No further action will be taken.”

A Crystal Palace supporters group released a statement of their own after the banner was displayed, further explaining their stance.

“The Saudi led takeover of Newcastle has rightly received widespread condemnation and anger,” Holmesdale Fanatics’ statement read.

“To give the thumbs up to this deal at a time when the Premier League is promoting the women’s game and inclusive initiatives such as rainbow armbands, shows the total hypocrisy at play and demonstrates the league’s soulless agenda where profits trump all.”
