No fourth covid vaccine needed according to UK officials

The covid booster still provides high levels of protection against severe disease from the Omicron variant among older adults, according to the latest data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Around three months after receiving a third jab, protection against hospitalisation among those aged 65 and over remains at about 90%, current figures suggest.

With two vaccine doses, protection against severe disease still drops to around 70% after three months and to 50% after six months, the Express reports.

Now, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has said it has taken the latest evidence into account for the ongoing review of the booster programme.

The JCVI has now advised that there is no immediate need to introduce even a second booster dose, or fourth jab, to the most vulnerable (care home residents and those aged over 80)

But the timing and need for further booster doses will continue to be reviewed as the data evolves, the committee has said.

The news comes after the Prime Minister said no further restrictions were needed in England.

A spokesperson for Boris Johnson said the covid booster jab programme has ensured that there is not the same level of pressure on the NHS and intensive care units as there has been in previous waves.
