No fines issued after police disperse crowds in Nottingham park

People are being urged to stick to the current coronavirus restrictions after police officers dispersed large crowds of people in the Arboretum.

The park, just off Waverley Street, proved a very popular spot on Saturday, February 27, as warmer temperatures and sunshine hit the city.

However, as more and more people began to gather into the afternoon, Nottinghamshire Police officers attended to disperse some of the larger crowds.

Music was being played and rubbish was left strewn across the park once they had left.

No fines were issued, however.

The force has issued a statement as of Sunday, February 28, with the sunshine returning for the rest of the weekend.

Chief Superintendent Ian Roberts, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We are continuing to carry out our high-visibility patrols across all areas of the city and county as part of our ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

"I'd like to thank the vast majority of people who are continuing to act responsibly and who are adhering to the rules which remain in force in order to keep people safe and help save lives.

"Parts of Nottinghamshire are still in the top 25% nationally for infection rates which is why it is essential that everyone still takes the restrictions extremely seriously. The only way to bring the numbers down is to stick to the rules.

“We all still need to do everything we can to reduce the spread. In cases where we find people blatantly choosing to break the rules and put themselves and others at risk, the force will take swift and robust action in order to protect the communities we serve.”

The force said officers will be back out patrolling the city, including the Arboretum, on Sunday.

They will first attempt to engage with members of the public and explain the rules, encouraging people to follow them, before issuing any fines.
