'No fans of ours' - Tottenham hit out at those in Spurs tops shouting abuse at peaceful protest

Tottenham Hotspur have condemned anyone claiming to be fans of the club who hurled abuse at protesters supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

The peaceful protest in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, on Monday afternoon had to be cut short after a large crowd started heckling and shouting at those involved, including racist abuse.

According to reports from the Hertfordshire Mercury, those opposing the event were standing there to protect the town's war memorial after seeing statues defaced in other protests across the UK.

However, in one video a counter-protester can be heard shouting "why don't you go back to Africa then" at the peaceful protesters and, in another, the hecklers start to chant "there's only one Lee Rigby".

Other videos show members of the crowd swearing and threatening the protesters.

Others show someone chanting "you're fat and you know you are" at one of the events' speakers, while one protester claimed to see Nazi salutes and that 'disgusting' abuse was being shouted at women among the protesters.

With hundreds on either side, the groups were separated by a line of police officers.

One protester was quoted in the Mercury as saying: "They were saying, 'go back to your own country', 'go back to your rock', there were Nazi salutes, 'you’re not welcome here','educate yourself', 'you’re only here because we allowed you to come here' - that narrative the whole time."

Some people in the counter-protest group were shown in images to be wearing Tottenham Hotspur apparel.

Spurs fan Declan McKenna tweeted the club to say: "@SpursOfficial there were many present claiming to represent Tottenham in this racist mob.

"As a lifelong supporter and season ticket holder you have to implement serious consequences for this behaviour, let them know that this hatred is not welcome. Ban them."

The club soon quote-tweeted him in reply, saying: "These are no fans of ours. This Club does not tolerate racist, discriminatory or hateful behaviour of any kind.

"We are looking into this and will take the necessary action against any so-called ‘fan’ involved."

One protester estimated around 300 people were supporting Black Lives Matter, with approximately 150-200 opposing the event.
