No easy fix for Dolphins’ rushing woes to start 2019

The Miami Dolphins, as a team, have rushed for 207 yards this season. In four games. It’s been a pretty rough affair trying to watch these Dolphins find room to work on the ground. And when the Dolphins do fight a glimmer of daylight in the ground game, flip a coin. The odds of there being a holding call to bring the play back are about 50/50.

Where do we go from here? What can the Dolphins do differently to help boost the running game? Aside of finding a whole new set of players mid-season, there’s not much on the table. Sure, the Dolphins drew a rough first three games with Baltimore, New England and Dallas — all stout defenses with imposing front sevens.

But Miami should’ve been able to find some life on the ground against the Chargers. They didn’t. Sure, you can find a moral victory in Miami’s 4.0 yards per carry against the Chargers if you’d like — but Miami’s recipe for success this season offensively will require a heavy investment into the run game. Miami, as a team, ran 18 times against the Chargers.

The offensive line is down to second and third string talent on the edges and Miami’s in a constant battle against themselves to avoid falling behind the sticks in early downs. Point blank, it’s a mess. And with the physical Washington Redskins next on the schedule after the Dolphins’ Week 4 bye, it’s difficult to see much improvement in the next game, either.
