'No doubt' - Premier League icon makes Michael Edwards admission over Mohamed Salah contract at Liverpool

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards will be “desperate” to resolve Mohamed Salah’s contract negotiations before he leaves the club at the end of the season.

That’s the view of former Premier League top goalscorer Kevin Phillips, who has spoken about Salah ’s ongoing contract talks with the Reds.

Salah is viewed by many as the best player in the world and Liverpool have been attempting to extend his current deal since the summer, which is due to expire in 2023.

It was announced earlier this month that sporting director Michael Edwards is set to leave the club in the summer, with Julian Ward lined up to take over, but Phillips believes Edwards will have one last target in mind.

“There’s no doubt about it, he will want to sort that [Salah’s] contract out before he leaves,” the ex-Sunderland striker told Football Insider .

“He will be desperate to get it sorted and I’m sure he will.

“I think some people would say his time at Liverpool would be tarnished if Salah doesn’t sign a new deal and leaves at the end of the season. I certainly don’t see it like that.

“He’s amazing at what he does, and has done an amazing job in my eyes in terms of player recruitment. You cannot take that away from him.”

Edwards was appointed sporting director in November 2016 and has helped oversee the creation of Jurgen Klopp’s successful side.

Salah’s contract talks have proved to be a sticking point though, with any potential deal likely to see him become the highest paid player in the club’s history.

The 29-year-old has reiterated his desire to remain at Anfield, though an agreement has yet to be reached.

“If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can't say much about that - it's not in my hands.,” he told Sky Sports , prior to last month’s 5-0 win over Manchester United.

"It depends on what the club want, not on me. At the moment I can't see myself ever playing against Liverpool.

“That would make me sad. It's hard, I don't want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad."
