No Dolphins listed among NFL.com’s top-40 free agents for 2020

The bright side to a total roster rebuild is that the core of the Miami Dolphins organization is fairly set. With some successful talents added to this Dolphins roster since 2016, Miami has clearly defined who their centerpiece defenders are by otherwise shunning borderline veterans and starting anew.

Nothing could further illustrate the clear lines of Miami’s roster than NFL.com’s list of the top-25 (with another 16 honorable mentions) pending free agents after the 2019 NFL season. There are no Dolphins on the list. At all.

There are certainly players that should interest the Dolphins — but Miami’s roster construction philosophy beyond the reboot is a bit of a mystery. Who knows how the Dolphins will elect to play the 2020 free agency period. The team’s willingness and interest in DE Trey Flowers suggests Miami could be players for the right pieces.

Furthermore, look at the Dolphins’ schedule free agency pool off of this roster: the most pressing need set to come off the books for 2020 is WR DeVante Parker — who actually has a club option and Miami is free to bring back without incident if he performs well in 2018.

Otherwise, Miami’s key free agents are: RB Kenyan Drake, CB Eric Rowe, DL Akeem Spence, OT Jordan Mills and LS John Denney.

Miami’s rebuild is centered in part around flushing out the bad — but also cultivating chemistry among those who remain. And the core of Miami’s team is clearly established and free to grow together without interruption, all while being added to courtesy of hand selected investments. No, the Dolphins don’t have the most talent. Not even close. But that also means they have the least to lose.
